DIVERS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

3/B – Red gorgonian - Paramuricea clavata

The most fluorescent and also the largest gorgonia in our seas. The colonies, generally colored carmine red, can rarely exceed a meter in height. There are also completely yellow and bicolored colonies: yellow and red, the latter ones are more common in the southern basins. The Paramuricea generally live on rocky beds over 20 meters deep, even if the beginning of the settlement is closely related to the transparency of the water: greater transparency therefore more penetration of the light at depth, forces these animals, typically sciaphilous, to colonize the rocky environments at depths of over 28-30 meters.
