17/G – Flying gurnard - Dactylopterus volitans

This curious fish has exceptionally wide pectoral fins, connected by a membrane that allows the animal "to glide" as if it were flying. Its color is reddish-brown generally with numerous blue, white and brown spots. It can exceed 40 cm in length. If disturbed it lifts itself from the bed and, with its beautifully-colored pectorals open, slowly glides away.
