17/O – Anglerfish - Lophius piscatorius

A strange-shaped animal, with an enormous, wide, and flat head, and an equally wide, semicircular mouth. It lives on sandy or muddy beds up to a depth of almost 1000 m. It grows to 2 meters in length and a weight of 40 kg. It is known in the fish markets by the name of anglerfish. It is a voracious predator; to capture its preys it digs a kind of hole in the sediment, where it hides, then it shakes the first ray of its backbone, which is extended, and has a flap of skin at the end similar to a small fish.
